Winter Color Analysis
What all Winters share is coolness with clarity. The three types are each pulled by deep, cool or clear — the palettes are set side by side here so you can tell which is yours.

Front-facing, unobstructed, evenly lit photos work best. Your photo is analysed on your phone or computer and is never uploaded.

Winter carries the strongest contrast of the four families. The gap between skin and hair is wide, eye colour is definite, and the face already has clear edges of its own. Winter is also the only family that genuinely suits pure black — the other three tend to be flattened by it. What hurts a Winter is muddiness: taupe, camel and mustard cancel out the clean contrast that is doing the work.
The three Winter types
Each palette below is the full set for that type, with the colours named — the point of a palette is to be able to shop from it.
Deep Winter
Depth leads, coolness follows. High contrast and low value are where you live, and you are one of the few types that genuinely suits pure black.
Your palette
Colours to avoid
What to wear: Deep burgundy, true navy, deep emerald and deep violet. Black and white together is an asset for you, not a risk.
Makeup direction: Deep berry, wine and true red. Black liner is fine here, which is not true of most types.
True Winter
Coolness leads and your colours need to stay clean. Definite cool colours — cool fuchsia, true blue, emerald — are what clear your skin.
Your palette
Colours to avoid
What to wear: Cool fuchsia, royal blue, emerald and purple. Pure black and pure white both work; camel and mustard are the two to avoid.
Makeup direction: Cool fuchsia, blue-based red and berry. Keep jewellery to silver and white gold.
Bright Winter
Clarity leads, coolness follows. Your features already carry strong contrast, so the cleaner the colour the better it reads — muted colours cancel out the thing that works.
Your palette
Colours to avoid
What to wear: Bright cherry, bright cyan, electric violet — full saturation. Black and white and hard colour contrasts both suit you.
Makeup direction: True red, hot pink and berry. Matte nudes and earth tones make you look tired.
Telling them apart
The question that actually matters is not which family you are in but which of the three you are. These are the distinctions that decide it.
Deep Winter vs True Winter
Ask whether depth or coolness is leading. Deep Winter is about low value — deep burgundy, deep emerald and true navy all work. True Winter is about being definitely cool, so colours with a clear hue like cool fuchsia, true blue and emerald sit better.
True Winter vs Bright Winter
Look at saturation. Bright Winter carries bright cherry and electric violet at near-neon strength. True Winter is just as cool but sits a little heavier.
Bright Winter vs Bright Spring
Both take high saturation; the difference is temperature. Bright Winter is cool clarity (cherry, bright cyan, electric violet), Bright Spring is warm clarity (coral, golden, emerald). When this pair gets mixed up, white balance has usually flipped the temperature outright.
The family this gets confused with
Winter is most often mistaken for Summer, since both are cool. The tell is intensity: Summer is flattened by saturated cool colours, Winter is lifted by them. If powder blue leaves you looking tired but royal blue brightens your eyes, you are a Winter, not a Summer.
All three wear silver, white gold and platinum. Yellow gold clashes with the cool base; rose gold is borderline.
Questions people ask
Is being a Winter just another way of saying black suits me?
Winter is indeed the only family that genuinely carries pure black, Deep and Bright Winter most of all. But do not treat it as a uniform — true navy, deep emerald and cool fuchsia are just as much Winter strengths and are more distinctive than black.
Are most East Asian people Winters?
That is too broad a claim. Dark hair and brows do push the value axis toward deep, but it is the hue and chroma axes that decide the family, and those vary a great deal between individuals. Measuring is more reliable than applying a stereotype about a population.
Can a Winter wear gold jewellery?
Lead with silver, white gold and platinum. Gold is not banned, but yellow gold clashes with the cool base; if you want gold, choose white or rose and keep it further from your face — a bracelet or belt buckle rather than earrings.
