Autumn Color Analysis
What all Autumns share is warmth with muted depth. The three types are each pulled by soft, warm or deep — the palettes are set side by side here so you can find yours.
Scan first if you are not sure you are a Spring, Summer, Autumn or Winter — the tool places you on all three axes before naming a season.
Front-facing, unobstructed, evenly lit photos work best. Your photo is analysed on your phone or computer and is never uploaded.

Autumn colour is warmth that has been out in the sun: rust, olive, bronze — warm but never bright. The undertone tends golden or peach-brown, with warm brown hair and brows. What hurts an Autumn is cool brightness: hot pink or icy blue next to Autumn colouring turns the skin sallow.
The three Autumn types
Each palette below is the full set for that type, with the colours named — the point of a palette is to be able to shop from it.
Soft Autumn
Soft first, warm second. Your colours look sun-faded: warm, but never bright. Pure black and stark white both land too hard.
Your palette
Colours to avoid
What to wear: Soft camel, warm taupe, moss and terracotta. Soft chocolate as your dark, warm cream as your white.
Makeup direction: Terracotta, muted brick and dried rose. Earth-toned eyes with a little gold, no glitter.
True Autumn
Warmth leads, and you can carry real depth of colour with it. Rust, olive and caramel — autumn as it actually looks — hold up against your skin rather than sitting on top of it.
Your palette
Colours to avoid
What to wear: Rust, olive, forest green and brick. Dark bronze instead of black, warm ivory instead of white.
Makeup direction: Brick, pumpkin and ochre lips. Copper, golden brown and olive on the eyes.
Deep Autumn
Depth leads, warmth follows. You can carry very heavy colour, and the deeper it goes the more your features come forward — as long as the dark is a warm one, not a cold one.
Your palette
Colours to avoid
What to wear: Mahogany, dark olive, pine and espresso. A full dark outfit reads rich on you rather than heavy.
Makeup direction: Deep brick, warm-leaning wine and russet. Go dark on the eyes with deep brown rather than black.
Telling them apart
The question that actually matters is not which family you are in but which of the three you are. These are the distinctions that decide it.
Soft Autumn vs True Autumn
Look at intensity. Soft Autumn wants everything one step gentler — camel, oat and muted teal, the colours that are hard to name. True Autumn carries rust and brick at full strength.
True Autumn vs Deep Autumn
Look at value. Deep Autumn holds mahogany and espresso, and the deeper the colour the more the features come forward. True Autumn is about warmth rather than depth, so mid-value rust and olive sit best.
Deep Autumn vs Deep Winter
Both are deep; the difference is temperature. Deep Autumn's darks are warm (mahogany, dark olive, ink navy), Deep Winter's are cool (deep burgundy, true navy, deep emerald). Pure black is the dividing line: Deep Winter carries it, on Deep Autumn it reads hard.
The family this gets confused with
Autumn is most often mistaken for Spring, since both are warm. The tell is chroma: Spring's warmth is clean, Autumn's is greyed. If bright coral makes your face look busy while terracotta looks settled and good, you are an Autumn, not a Spring.
All three wear gold, especially matte, bronze and antiqued finishes. Bright silver reads out of place.
Questions people ask
Can an Autumn wear black?
Only Deep Autumn carries it, and even then it wants warm-toned makeup or jewellery alongside. On Soft and True Autumn, black hardens the face and turns the skin sallow. Dark bronze, espresso and ink navy all work better as your dark.
Autumn and Spring are both warm — which am I?
Ask which looks better on you, rust or bright coral. An Autumn looks settled in rust and terracotta and busy in bright coral; a Spring is the reverse. The tool measures the numerical version of the same question: where you land on the clear/soft axis.
Deep Autumn and Deep Winter are both dark — what is the difference?
Whether the darks are warm or cool. Deep Autumn is mahogany, dark olive and ink navy; Deep Winter is deep burgundy, true navy and deep emerald. Pure black is the fastest dividing line: it suits Deep Winter and reads hard on Deep Autumn.
